About the Project
At the start of this semester, I was asked to pick a piece of my work that I wrote prior to starting my writing minor. Knowing that whatever piece I decided to work with would be my overarching theme for the remainder of class, I needed to choose something that interests and inspires me. After a few days of rummaging through old computer documents, I soon landed on my origin piece, my Common Application Essay. The original purpose of this essay was to showcase strengths through personal experience and advocate for my admission to college. I continue to see this essay as a jumping off point for gaining independence from my twin. The story is continuous and will not be over after this project but through this project I am able to track my progress thus far and expose issues that other twins, myself included, suffer with at different stages in their lives. To do this, I generated a zine to express my current and past standings with being a twin. I chose a zine to express my thoughts because it is an open-ended publication with no concrete “rules”. The freedom embedded in the zine has helped me to look into a lot of topics at multiple levels based on how significant I see them being to my final product. This freedom is contradictory to the freedom that twins lack which is why it works so well to tell my story. Through the creative process of constructing my finished product, I hope to open up conversations about twins, independence, separation anxiety, and personal experiences faced by twins around the world today.
